Degreasing

Seidel’s environmentally conscious philosophy is applied to designing processes that produce no hazardous waste from the start. The first step in our process is degreasing the parts. Most traditional vacuum degreasing systems use chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, which are toxic. Examples of this group of solvents include Tetrachloroethylene (trade names: Perk, Perchlorethylene), Trichloroethylene and others. Instead of using toxic solvents and having to prevent or reduce their environmental impact, Seidel uses non-halogenated solvents, which are friendly to the environment, hazardous waste free, and gentle on the parts.

Seidel’s degreasing process:

  • Raw parts are delivered in plastic onion bags and carefully placed inside baskets, size: 50” length, 19” width, 11.5” height. This is extremely important in order to reduce scratching the parts during the process. Please contact us if you have questions about the onion bags.
  • Seidel's vacuum degreaser cleans the parts without using hydrocarbon chlorinated solvents. Therefore oil on the parts is not contaminated with chlorinated solvents and can be used as drawing oil again.
  • The process runs at 180F. Low temperature allows for the use of onion bags. High temperature processes, including the more commonly used Perk process, would melt them.
  • Frequency controlled motors handle the movement of the baskets inside the degreaser. These control the speed of basket rotation and deliver optimized performance for best degreasing results.
  • The raw aluminum parts stay in the onion bags during the degreasing process and are unloaded after degreasing with the onion bags still intact. There is no bulk dumping of parts from basket into a carton. Scratches and dents are dramatically reduced due to this improved handling method.
      This degreasing system does not produce any hazardous waste.

    Common alternatives to Seidel’s degreasing system:

    • Traditional solvent vacuum degreasing systems with i.e. Perchlorethylene have draw backs:
         a. Even the closed loop systems lose a small
             percentage of the solvent into the oil and
             make the oil a hazardous waste
         b. Perchlorethylene attacks the ozone layer

        Aqueous cleaning systems also have draw backs: 
            a. Creates waste water
            b. Uses a huge amount of energy for the drying process
            c. Small container sized parts allow for the accumulation of water and must   
                be rotated during the drying process before evaporating the rest. Therefore part
                on part damage is not avoidable  and creates a problem for cosmetic finishes.
